    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an apprentice to learn the skills needed in order to make high quality leather goods. These are specialist skills that can be utilised in successful career at Gough Bridles. The right candidate will be expected to contribute to the full manufacturing process and, it is hoped, they will eventually take on apprentices themselves to continue the successful business.

The successful applicant will be a practical, hands-on individual, predominantly working leather and associated tools.

Tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Preparation, staining, assembly of leather goods
  • Cutting
  • Machine and hand stitching
  • Keeping the work area tidy
  • Following company guidance and adhering to health and safety policy

The manufacture of equestrian leather goods will be the main aspects of the role, but you may also be asked to complete other tasks.


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

Candidates must have the ability to work on their own initiative and those that have some knowledge or experience of manufacturing, engineering or reading drawings would be at an advantage.

Candidates must be accurate and, above all, take pride in their work.

The successful candidate will be a team player who understands what is required to continue to do well under pressure.

Personal qualities

The successful candidate will be positive and outgoing with dedication and patience to achieve outstanding results.

Questioning when unsure and recognising the limit to their own ability.

Qualifications required

A* - C GCSE English & Maths or equivalent grades preferred but not essential

Future prospects

Progression depends on the person and this will be reviewed throughout the apprenticeship and decided on completion. It is hoped that the successful applicant will have their hard work and dedication rewarded by a full-time position. The right candidate will have the opportunity to continue to develop their skills and become part of the small team on a permanent basis.
