    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual to work as an apprentice for the Sir John Fitzgerald Group in one of their prestigious restaurants as an Apprentice Chef @ Cafe Royal, Newcastle. You will work with a team of Chefs to be fully trained to the high stanadard of SJF Chefs.

Duties include:

  • Basic food preparation
  • Assisting the Chef De Parties.
  • Plating Cold starters and deserts.
  • Cleaning of small equipment.
  • Working in different sections.

Qualifications required

NVQ L1 Professional Cookery would be an advantage but not essential

Future prospects

To become a full time Chef of a SJF kitchen brigade. To progress to aspire through the kitchen ranks and run their own kitchen.

Things to consider

The post requires somebody who is prepared to work long hours which include evenings and weekends. From 1st of April 2017 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. Those between the ages of 19-24 who are in their second year (or third year) need to be paid the National Minimum Wage for their age bracket. In April 2016 the new National Living Wage was implemented and therefore if you are over the age of 25 and in your second or third year of an Apprenticeship you will be entitled to be paid the National Living Wage.
