This role covers a wide range of specialisms, including:

  • the basics of vehicle technologies and emerging technologies
  • types and characteristics of light vehicles
  • diagnostic principles and logical problem-solving techniques
  • basic tasks common to all procedures
  • how to maintain a safe and efficient workshop
  • using specialist equipment
  • servicing and maintaining a vehicle without supervision
  • investigating vehicle faults and identifying causes
  • removing, repairing and replacing parts in line with manufacturer's standards

Although the levels of skill may vary they are all jobs, which require concentrated, physical activity. You will gain in-depth knowledge of a vehicle and its systems. But you will also use high-tech equipment to find out what’s wrong with the vehicle and then use a range of tools to remove, replace or repair faulty or worn components.

These roles bring a great amount of satisfaction to individuals with a passion for problem solving.

Qualifications required

Entry Requirements:

  • England, Wales and Northern Ireland: 3 GCSEs at A*-C, in Maths and English or equivalent
  • Scotland: 3 Standard Grades at General/Credit level
  • Aged 16+

Future prospects

Once you become qualified and more experienced, there are plenty of opportunities to develop your career by moving into supervision and aftersales management. This means there's a world of opportunities ahead of you. You may also be able to work towards a Consultant Technician status over 4 years.

Things to consider

The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Training provider

A 3 year apprenticeship programme delivering the brand new Motor vehicle service and maintenance technician (light vehicle). Training is delivered in your place of employment and on a block release basis.

Suitable for applicants who already have some entry level experience or who are taking their first steps in the industry.
