    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

As an Apprentice your duties will include meeting clients, answering the phone, making bookings, helping colleagues with clients, cleaning and making refreshments. As you progress you will become involved in styling, colouring and cutting.

You will receive a full induction in the salon with ongoing support as well as having 1-2-1 two weekly visits.

You will be assisting stylists in ensuring that all clients are given the highest levels of customer service with special attention to comfort and friendliness. You will also generate and promote a professional working atmosphere and assist stylists in advising clients in all aspects of services available, including advising clients of all products, tools and equipment available for retail purchase.

By assisting the salon manager and the stylists, you will gain the necessary knowledge and experience to help you to progress in this exciting career.

You will be supervised by a fully qualified member of staff throughout your training.

  • Have ambition and have confidence with talking to clients.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Possibly have had worked before showing work ethic

Personal qualities

The successful apprentices will need to be familiar with current trends within the hairdressing and fashion industry. You will need to be highly motivated and enthusiastic about hairdressing with a friendly personality to interact efficiently with customers and colleagues.

Qualifications required

No formal qualifications required however the willingness to learn is essential.

Future prospects

Through having completed the level 2 qualification in Hairdressing, you will then have the opportunity to progress onto the advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship.

With the experience and the skills you have gained, you can use these to maximise the opportunities to further your career at the end of the apprenticeship programme.

Things to consider

Working in a salon is tiring and means being active all day. Being on time is especially important as you don’t want to keep clients waiting and you must be flexible and be prepared to be working long hours.The salon will be moving to 95 Fore Street Topsham, Exeter, EX3 OHQ. From 1st of April 2017 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. Those between the ages of 19-24 who are in their second year (or third year) need to be paid the National Minimum Wage for their age bracket. In April 2016 the new National Living Wage was implemented and therefore if you are over the age of 25 and in your second or third year of an Apprenticeship you will be entitled to be paid the National Living Wage.
