  • To work with the Kitchen Manager in the control of food costs and portion control in order to achieve the required Gross Profit percentage.
  • To work with the Kitchen Manager in regularly checking prices and quality from nominated suppliers and, as directed by the Kitchen Manager, to act on any discrepancies.
  • To work with the Kitchen Manager in compiling and costing all menus to meet customer   requirements and target ratios.


  • Responsible for all aspects of food preparation to the required standard for all events, as directed by the Kitchen Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with the provisions of food safety legislation and other statutory instruments; maintenance of associated records as directed.
  • To work towards the development and maintenance of high standards of customer service and quality.
  • To work towards ensuring that effective ordering, production, stock control and minimum wastage levels are achieved.
  • To assist in the planning of menus, incorporating balance, nutrition, colour and textures with flair and imagination.

General Control and Supervision

To ensure that:

  • All required records and returns are completed accurately and promptly in accordance with relevant policies.
  • Cash purchases are kept to a minimum and the authorised suppliers policy as advised by the Principal Finance and Administration Officer is strictly adhered to.     
  • Upon inspection, the condition of all equipment and facilities is assessed and, where necessary, written requests for remedial action are presented to the Kitchen Manager.


  • Ensure that feedback and ideas received from staff and customers are reported and acted upon where appropriate.

Marketing and Promotion

  • Contribute to the development, co-ordination and implementation of marketing and business plans.


  • To attend training courses and management meetings as directed.
  • To undertake any other such duties that are reasonably commensurate with the level of this post.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills


  • Ability to communicate effectively with people across all levels
  • Basic numeracy skills
  • Able to demonstrate good food presentation skills
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply techniques to promote customer care
  • Practical implications of Regulations and Legislation relating to safe and hygienic working within a catering service


  • Full current driving licence
  • IFHO Basic Food Hygiene Certificate or equivalent
  • Able to demonstrate flair and imagination in food preparation

Personal qualities

  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends on a frequent and regular basis
  • Good imagination and creative
  • Desire to progress in a career working as a chef

Qualifications required

  • IFHO Basic Food Hygiene Certificate or equivalent
  • Good Maths and English skills are required for this post
  • Previous Level 1 Certificate in a relevant area e.g. Catering and Hospitaliy

Things to consider

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. Situated on a main bus route to Manchester, Buile Hill Park Hall is located approximately 1.5 miles from Salford Crescent Rail Station. Training provider

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery
  • Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles
  • Functional Skills Maths and English

The qualification will be delivered in the workplace with the assessor visiting once every 4-6 weeks as well as attend college once a week for kitchen skills. If functional skills are required, weekly attendance will be required.
