Working on the helpdesk the jobholder will report to the head of technical services who will act as a mentor.  The role is highly technical and will provide an excellent degree of IT knowledge over time. 

The jobholder will be required to answer incoming calls and make outgoing calls as well as answering emails.  All actions will need to be accurately logged in a support system.  Calls will need to be prioritised depending on the urgency of the issue. 

The role involves troubleshooting and explaining issues to clients in an understandable and jargon free manner.

The jobholder will need to develop an understanding of many software packages as well as hardware and infrastructure.

Network administration and routine maintenance will also form part of the role. 

This role will have a starting wage but this maybe reviewed with an increase in skills

A keen interest in everything technical and the greater the understanding of computers and IT the better.

Personal qualities

Really keen with a passion for IT.  Confident talking to clients on the phone. Professional sounding.  Able to cope under pressure.

Qualifications required

GCSE Grade C or above in Maths, English and ICT or equivalent.

Future prospects

Our last apprentice was given a full contract and promoted to first line support and has now progressed to second line support. We like to retain apprentices wherever possible as once trained they have a high level of knowledge. Our employees are extremely respected by our competitors and have never failed to get work if they decide to leave the company.

Things to consider

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour from 1st April 2017. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.

Training provider

The successful candidate will study the Level 2 IT, Software, Web and Telecoms Professional Apprenticeship Framework. This includes Health & Safety, Roles and Responsibilities and a Technical Certificate. Candidates that do not hold GCSE Grade C or equivalent in Maths, English and ICT will be required to sit Functional Skills in these subjects
