    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Diagnostic testing and inspection of plant and equipment.
  • Undertake maintenance, repair and installation of plant and equipment, initiating modification works as required to maintain or improve effective running of the plant.
  • Respond to engineering breakdown and record as appropriate.
  • Carry out maintenance identified as part of Planned Preventative Maintenance Schedule.
  • Undertake any training and development necessary to fulfil specification requirements i.e. confined spaces, working at height, health and safety etc.
  • Maintain health and safety of self and colleagues-making safe any potential hazard and reporting to Health and Safety Manager.
  • Responsible for returning any defective equipment to the Engineering Manager for replacement or repair i.e. slings, chains, harnesses, lifting equipment etc.
  • Report any breach of health and safety or environmental policy to appropriate member of staff.
  • Ensure safety of self and others by safe isolation of any equipment during maintenance and repair activities and making use of safety equipment provided by John Pointon & Sons Ltd. In accordance with the Company Permit to Work system.
  • Behave in a responsible manner taking into account best practice for those both on and off site reducing risk of reported incidents to Environmental Agency.
  • Housekeeping of Maintenance Area (Fitting Shop), and immediate work area (around site) must be kept to a high standard at all times
  • Assisting colleagues with any other duties as required.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and working at Height.

  • Able to repair many items/machinery in the work place.
  • Help out in many ways at the work place and always give a helping hand when ever possible.
  • Know what the helf and safety is in the work place and never disapprove witht the rules,

Personal qualities

  • Behaviour has to be good at all times and you cant be disrespectful in anyway to any of the other workers on tyhe site.
  • Always willing to assist others with tasks that they could be struggling with.
  • Has to be able to work in small spaces and has to be able to reach high areas easily.
  • Always have a good work ehtic and make sure to show that at all times to your superiors.

Qualifications required

  • British Standard BS4872 welding qualification (MMA, MAGS, PIPE)
  • Engineering qualifications – City & Guilds,  NVQ or equivalent
  • Pneumatics and Hydraulics – City & Guilds,  NVQ or equivalent

Future prospects

Permanent position, upon successful completion of the apprenticeship.
