    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

    We are open from 8am till 10pm and 9am till 6pm in town. Hours will be more than likely involve weekends a couple of evening and some days.

We are keen for someone to join our business to learn every aspect of running a small local shop. You will work alongside a senior member of staff to gain more experience in the retail trade.

To start is will be learning:

  • Stock and products
  • Till and customer service
  • Moving onto price, profits, VAT.

In gaining business skills you will learn how to make up gift hamper, sell ice creams and make sandwiches in our bus sandwich bar. Some heavy lifting with be needed as and when we get deliveries.

  • Will require basic maths skills, Grade C or above, GCSE or equivalent 
  • Will require basic English Grade D or above
  • Be able to use a calculator with confidence and write clearly.

Future prospects

Once you have completed the years training a permanent position will become available either full or part time depending on what hours are available.

Things to consider

Retail generally serves the public at hours when people are off work. You may have to work a Friday night when friends are out, or a Sunday when family are at home.
