    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

You will:

  • Support the stylists.
  • Ensure clients around the salon are being looked after.
  • Advise clients on products and services available to them.
  • Ensure the salon is running smoothly and efficiently.
  • Adhere to the salon policies and procedures.
  • Engage with the team and contribute to a positive working environment.
  • Work alongside the receptionist to maintain stock, attendance, holiday, bookings and any other admin required.
  • Attend any training scheduled training sessions and follow your learning plan to achieve optimum success in your course development.
  • Keep the salon clean and tidy at all times.
  • Clean, cut and colour hair where appropriate and required.

Qualifications required

Although the market is competitive, no formal qualifications are required. However, you will be required to have achieved Mathematics and English GCSEs A*-C or equivalent by the end of your Apprenticeship. 

Future prospects

There may be a possibility of progressing onto an Advanced (Level 3) Apprenticeship after successful completion of the Intermediate (Level 2) Apprenticeship.

The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:
  • NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths and English, depending on prior qualifications

  • This will be completed by monthly workshops at The Henley College and by work-based supported learning with regular visits from an Assessor.
