    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

As an apprentice you will be mentored by experienced members of staff to be able to perform the following tasks:

  • General maintenance and repairs on commercial workboats and barges, and associated heavy machinery
  • Maintenance and servicing of diesel engines/generators/ships machinery/cranes/excavators/pumps, etc
  • General Cleaning, lubrication and repairs of equipment and machinery
  • Cleaning/Preparation and painting/preservation of steelwork on vessels and equipment
  • General cleanliness and organisation of vessels, workshop areas and site
  • General assistance to senior engineers and other team members

Future prospects

Once the apprenticeship is completed then there is every possibility to continue training to a higher level, with prospects of becoming a valued member of the team within the company if work criteria met. There may also be future opportunity to work on board commercial workboats in the local area.

With this apprenticeship you will complete the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Marine Systems Engineering
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English & ICT
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills

All training will be delivered by a combination of training in the work place with one day a week release to our Fareham Campus. It is likely that college attendance will be by block release with college days taking place for 2-3 days every 2 months. You will be mentored by experienced members of staff while developing your skills to a nationally recognised industry standard.
