Enthusiastic Apprentices required for the role of Commis Chef. The role offers a fantastic working environment and a good work/life balance, behind a solid ethos of training and development for all our team members.

The Commis Chef role is varied and will involve catering for many different events and service styles - this could include anything from a high quality breakfast to student court food, as well as large scale conference and event food to top class restaurant standard Private Dining.

Kitchen experience and Food Hygiene certifications would help your application, but most importantly we are looking for an individual with a passion for high quality food and the right attitude. We value a desire to develop your skills and knowledge in the Kitchen.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

All skills can be taught but desirable skills are:

  • Basic knife skills.
  • A good understanding of food hygiene.
  • Some preparation and cooking skills.

Personal qualities

  • Good personal hygiene.
  • Good time keeping and attendance.
  • Common sense and initiative.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
  • Desire to succeed and progress.

Qualifications required

GCSEs grade C (and above) in Maths and English (or equivalent qualifications).

Future prospects

We always employ with a view of progression; the next stage would for you to become a Chef de Partie.

Things to consider

Rate of pay will be dependent on experience. Whilst generally this role has a better work/life balance than many kitchen roles, the position will still involve early starts (6.00am) and late finishes (10.00pm) and working weekends. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
