Purpose of Job

To undertake a structured training programme upon the conclusion of which you will be able to inspect, maintain, service, diagnose and repair vehicles, plant and associated components.

Major duties and responsibilities:

To actively participate in a structured programme of learning, combined with ‘on the job’ training’.  

At the conclusion of the training, be able to:

  • Inspect, maintain, service, diagnose, repair and adjust plant and their associated components and systems in a safe and economical manner employing such skills and knowledge as may be required to current Road Transport and Health & Safety legislation and policies.
  • Recognise, diagnose and report on defects or symptoms of impending failure on vehicles and plant and their associated components and systems.
  • Interpret and implement relevant service and repair data and instructions, technical bulletins and manufacturer’s modifications.
  • Service, repair and adjust auxiliary tools and equipment as directed in a safe and proper manner.
  • Inspect, fit and balance vehicle tyres and carry out puncture and other minor repairs.
  • Complete all documentation as may be required in connection with work allocated and as required by legislation.
  • Ensure that all necessary protective clothing/footwear/devices are used for work in hand and that all work procedures are in accordance with engineering best practice and Health & Safety policies.

Qualifications required

Minimum of:

  • 3 x Grade D GCSE’s or above in English, Mathematics and ICT, with Science or Engineering Qualification (or equivalent).


  • Working towards or have completed a minimum of an NVQ Level 2 in an Engineering Discipline with Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics.

Future prospects

On completion of the apprenticeship, depending on the availability of vacancies, every attempt will be made to assist you in obtaining a permanent established post with the Council although further or permanent employment within the Council is not guaranteed.

  • You will spend four days a week with your employer and undergo training from PROCAT based at our Redbridge site for one day per week.
