As a Viridor Apprentice you’ll be contributing to the success of Peterborough ERF by maintaining and repairing systems pivotal to power generation within the Energy Recovery Industry which currently supplies 4000 Megawatts into the UK Grid. Successful candidates will need to commit to a comprehensive training programme and completion of a portfolio of evidence to support an NVQ.  You’ll be working on complex systems  including state of the art boilers, turbines and control systems. We are offering training, qualifications, real life experience and the opportunity to ‘Earn while you learn’. You will become knowledgeable about new and innovative technologies that will improve the safety and capability of our industry for generations to come. What will this involve?

  • General fabrication and Bench fitting
  • Welding using MIG, TIG & MMA processes
  • Fault finding, maintenance and repair of rotating machinery i.e. feed water pumps and combustion fans
  • Fault finding, maintenance and repair of conveyor systems including drag link and vibrating types
  • Fault finding, investigation and repair of steam, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Maintenance and repair of overhead cranes and ancillary equipment (grabs)
  • Fault finding investigation, maintenance and repair of water treatment plant (water softeners and reverse osmosis plants)
  • General factory service work (pipe fitting etc)
  • Plant Preventative Maintenance tasks
  • Use of computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS)

The next 4 years are going to be really busy learning loads of new skills and gaining experience in technologies and area's you didn't even know existed. This is a blended course where you will study electrical, electronic and mechanical disciplines at college and in the workplace.

 Year 1 - Five days a week at college; four days spent learning workshop skills such as milling, turning, mounting and wiring electrical components plus one day studying engineering theory for a BTEC qualification.

 Years 2 to 4 - Four days a week will be spent at our site in Peterborough, and one day a week in college completing your BTEC qualification (second year). During this time, as well as practical on the job experience and time spent in placements, you will also be working towards achieving the NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering Manufacture. 

During your time on the apprenticeship it's essential that you are mindful of the safety and environment of the industry we work in as it is at the heart of everything you do. You may be offered additional work related company training as well as developing functional skills in literacy, numeracy and IT.

Desired skills

STEM subjects with any additional supporting qualifications in Engineering, Electronics and Resistant Materials or similar is strongly recommended.

Desirable but not essential; able to demonstrate active interest in engineering through voluntary work, clubs, societies and / or work experience.

Personal qualities

We are looking for candidates with a flexible and proactive approach to tasks and a willingness to learn.

Demonstrates motivation to meet or exceed expected standards and able to maintain a positive attitude in challenging circumstances.

Can work with supervision and contribute to broadening the team’s capability / experience.

Able to communicate with all levels within the business.

You must have good time management skills and a ‘can do’ attitude to problem solving.

A quick learner able to pick up new technologies and to think laterally when finding solutions to problems.

You must be able to work well as part of a team, share knowledge with colleagues and demonstrate enthusiasm for developing your skills.

You must have a tidy, well organised, flexible approach to work and the ability to complete specified tasks in a precise and methodical manner.

A passion for engineering and associated mind-set is a must.

Qualifications required

A minimum of five GCSE's (or equivalent qualifications) at grade C (Grade 5) and above including English, Science and Maths. Any supporting qualifications in Engineering, Electronics and Resistant Materials or similar is strongly recommended and will help support your application.

The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.30 per hour (From October 1st 2016 this will be increasing by 3% to £3.40 per hour). This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
