    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Responsible for: Upholstering all types and styles of furniture and other allied items as instructed, whilst maintaining acceptable quality standards within expected time scales. Examining work for faults, reporting any cutting or sewing faults immediately to the supervisor. Operating the tools and equipment with due care and reporting any faults immediately.

Main Duties:

  • From work provided by Supervisor – upholster items at accepted production levels.
  • Check work against product specification sheet to ensure correct procedures are followed. .
  • Learn new styles and changes within the range as advised.
  • Work as accurately and safely as possible reporting any errors or problems as they arise.
  • Upholster different ranges of furniture from start to finish

Other Duties: During periods of illness, absence and holidays to provide cover for other members of staff as agreed with your supervisor.  To abide by company rules as published and pay due regard to the Health and Safety policy as published.

Training provider

Training will be provided in all areas of Upholstery

The qualifications that the apprentice will work towards will be:

  • NVQ Diploma in Modern Upholstery meeting new standard
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths
  • Employment Rights & Responsibilities

If the Apprentice has already completed Functional Skills at Level 1 (or equivalent) and can provide copies of certificates they will not be required to complete Functional Skills, but will be given the opportunity to work towards a higher level of Functional Skills if they wish to do so. Training will be delivered on a block basis and will mean the successful individual will need to be happy to attend training in Nottingham four times per year.
