    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The ideal candidate will be expected to work alongside qualified staff members creating graphic and tinting applications to different surfaces. You will be expected to listen to instructions and carry out duties asked of you. To begin with, you will spend much of your time learning about the basics and the materials used. Once you become a little more experienced you will pick up a range of additional duties.

For this position, the work is based predominately in Plymouth, however there may be occasions that you will be asked to work away for 1 – 3 days at a time. Expenses such as food and accommodation is all paid for by the employer. Due to this your hours may fluctuate, however will never be below 40 hours per week. If you do work over the 40 allocated hours, this will be paid at the higher wage for your age.

This apprenticeship is very bespoke to others on offer and your job will change dramatically from week to week. You could be working on a football ground, a school or a conservatory to a vehicle in the tinting workshop.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

For this position you will need a keen eye for detail and pride in your work. As you will be dealing with graphics, you must have good spelling and be very accurate.

Personal qualities

You must be a strong candidate for this role who is able to listen to instructions, put in a hard days work and adapt to different working environments. You must also have strong communication skills as you will be dealing with customers and could be also be in commercial settings.

Qualifications required

A basic knowledge of English and Maths is required for this position with GCSE grades of A-E.

Future prospects

On completion of your level 2 apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to progress to a level 3 to further your career.

Training provider

The Apprenticeship in Fenestration Installation consists of:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Fenestration Installation
  • Level 2 Certificate in Glass Related Operations
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety/Safeguarding

Most aspects of your training will be delivered on-site with the employer, and you will have regular site visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor, who will monitor your progress throughout your apprenticeship programme.

Skills Group will also support you to achieve Emergency First Aid and a Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

You will also be supported by Skills Group to complete your CSCS online test, to achieve your CSCS Card which enables you to carry out site work, if required.
