It is an interesting time to consider joining Watts Farms. This third generation family run business has seen much change and expansion over recent years.  Watts Farms Packers Ltd grows, harvests and packs produce. Currently we are growing a multitude of different crops including kale, spinach, salad onions, herbs, fine/green beans, chilies, pakchoi to name a few on 8 sites; 6 in Kent and 2 and Essex spanning over 1000 hectares. This role is based at the Farningham, Kent site.

We grow our own produce. We supply retailers and non -retail outlets. To ensure our customers have all round availability of products the business also imports.

We are looking for a dynamic, hardworking apprentice to join our experienced team. We will support your growth and development within this sector and encourage managerial skills. You will experience all aspects of fresh produce cropping, from planting or drilling to irrigation and harvest then following the process through packing to dispatch.

Reports to:-

Farm Manager

Duties will include:

  • Planting/Drilling crops
  • Growing crops ( different irrigation techniques )
  • Monitoring of pests and recording information (pheromone/sticky traps etc).
  • Disease monitoring of the crops
  • Nutritional monitoring
  • Harvesting crops
  • Moving crops into storage
  • Monitoring crops in storage
  • Using tractors and mechanical harvesters
  • Machine maintenance
  • Working in a team.
  • And far more….

Your training

During your time at         you will be collating evidence of learning, be observed and receive training as to how we do things. This is averaged over a 12 - 18 month period and includes time spent at the beginning of the programme completing ‘sign-up’ & functional skills assessment. An assessor will visit you in the work-place every four to eight weeks. You will attend Berkshire College of Agriculture on a day release programme.

£5.50 per hour however, we are able to consider more if you have more experience.

About the employer

Watts Farms is a family-run business which covers 10 sites in Kent, Essex and Bedfordshire. We farm over 600 hectares of land, growing 60 different crops and employing nearly 200 people. We supply over 500 restaurants (70% are within the fine dining sector) as well as working with major retailers, the NHS, other packers and a range of wholesalers. This role is based at our Farningham site.
