    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

With a mechanical bias, a technically orientated apprenticeship is offered within the Engineering Office of Booth Industries Limited based in Bolton.

The company specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of high integrity steel doors ranging from personnel access sized doors up to aircraft hangar sized doors, all of which are engineered in-house by Booth’s experienced engineers.

All technical drawings, general arrangement layouts and manufacturing data are prepared using Autocad and 3D Inventor software. The successful candidate will work alongside the engineering technicians and will be trained to undertake the various duties associated with the engineering activities, including:

  • the preparation of engineering requisitions
  • material lists
  • bills of materials and preparation of drawings using the in-house CAD facilities

Qualifications required

Ideally a minimum of 5-Nr science orientated GCSE (or equivalent), Grade C Pass or higher, including Maths and English.

Future prospects

The Company will support the successful candidate to achieve Ordinary & Higher Technician Certification as part of the apprenticeship by attending the appropriate college courses on a part-time/day release basis. Further higher education sponsorship may be considered, dependent upon the candidate’s ability and success during the apprenticeship. Future prospects include progression to Designer level, Project Engineer status with other prospects including project or site management.

Things to consider

The Company undertakes works of a sensitive nature for various Government institutions, including the supply of security products to various industries, for which Security Clearances are required and therefore it will be important that the successful candidate will have held a British Passport for a minimum of 7 years and not hold a criminal record that may compromise this as training could involve working on such projects.
