While working towards your HNC/HND your aim is to enhance practical skills and knowledge through on the job training in a commercial production environment.

Working with a wide range of in-house experts you will be designing and developing in-house products and components, or interpreting client's drawings into suitable manufacturing drawings, then overseeing the product through the fabrication process.

Qualifications required

To start on the Higher Apprenticeship we recommend that you have a minimum of 5 GCSE's (A*-C/9-4) in Maths, English and Science or equivalent. Maths and Science at A-Level could be an advantage. You can also start a Higher Apprenticeship if you have a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in an Engineering subject.

Future prospects

Full-time employment will be offered to the candidate that shows willingness and a desire to succeed as well as possible wage increase upon completion.

Things to consider

You will need to complete a DTA online application form at www.derwenttraining.co.uk and attend an online assessment test at DTA's training centre in Malton. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Based north of York, Plowman Bros is a design/engineering/fabrication company specialising in engineered metalwork and manufacturing a wide range of products to supply a variety of industry sectors. Plowman Bros produce products ranging from train cleaning equipment and large roof structures to trailers, replacement machine and vehicle components to stairways and metalworks for the building industry.

Training provider

You will be registered on the Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship to study for a HNC/HND in Technical Support Engineering. You will be required to attend Derwent Training Association one day a week and work with the employer the other 4 days learning whilst on the job.
