    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Duties will include basic hairdressing tasks such as:

  •  Assisting stylists
  •  Shampooing clients
  •  General housekeeping
  •  Basic blow-drying and straightening techniques
  •  Dealing with clients at point of reception

The apprentice will learn about all aspects of hairdressing such as cutting, colouring and styling.

  • This role would ideally suit someone with a creative flair.
  • The ability and willingness to communicate with the public is a distinct advantage.

Personal qualities

You will be a good communicator, hard working with a willingness to learn new skills.

Qualifications required

Basic Numeracy and Literacy.

Future prospects

You will begin your apprenticeship at level 2 and on completion can advance to level 3. This position is initially being offered for the duration of the apprenticeship. Depending on the candidate's performance and a suitable position being available at the time, a permanent position may be offered.

Things to consider

This is a physically demanding job as you will be sweeping up after stylists and shampooing client's hair.

The Robert Douglas Hair Workshop was formed in 1988, when the late Robert Douglas turned a jewellery shop into a business specialising in hair care. Today the hair salon based in Woodbridge is run by Nadia, who is a fully qualified all-round stylist with 22 years' experience in hairdressing.
