    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Duties cover all aspects of painting and decorating  inside/out. 

  • Preparing background surfaces for painting.
  • Applying paint by brush and roller.
  • Some filling and plastering may be needed then use of paints and wallpapers.
  • You will use different tools and materials. 
  • Always ensuring the work area is kept clean and tidy and Health and Safety guidelines are adhered to.
  • Hanging standard wall coverings depending upon ability and the company training.

For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. Individuals who already have a Level 4 qualification are now eligible for a Level 5 or above Higher Apprenticeship. They are not eligible for funding for an Intermediate Level, Advanced Level or Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship.

Training provider

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations (Construction).
  • Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating.
  • Functional skills Mathematics and English if required.

The NVQ will be delivered in the workplace which is supported by the Diploma which is completed on a college day release basis. All delivery will take place at Salford City College City Skills Campus.
