To assist with the following duties:

  • Carry out cleaning and related duties in residents own bedrooms and communal areas of the Home in order to maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness in the Home
  • Carry out the preparation, serving and clearing of meals and related duties in residents own bedrooms and dining area to a high standard
  • Maintain high standards of hygiene in food preparation, serving and clearing
  • Ensure bedding, towels, residents personal clothing, other items are washed, cleaned and maintained to a high standard in line with Home procedures
  • Maintain dignity in care

Daily duties will include:

  • Clean residents bedrooms as instructed using equipment and materials provided
  • Remove clinical waste to yellow bags from sluice bins to external storage bins for collection by waste disposal contractors
  • Clean public areas of the Home
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the Home and report any concerns about cleanliness or hygiene, (including unpleasant smells) to the Manager/RGN
  • Check all toilets daily and ensure spare toilet rolls, clean hand towels and hand soap containers refilled
  • Use all materials and equipment as instructed and in accordance with safe and hygienic practices (see Training Notes on the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health - COSHH and Health & Safety at Work)
  • Ensure the safe and secure storage of all equipment and cleaning materials at all times
  • Assist with laundry duties as required and operate laundry equipment as instructed
  • Assist with kitchen duties as required and operate kitchen  equipment as instructed
  • Clear, wash and store all dishes, utensils, cutlery and kitchen equipment
  • Prepare the tea/coffee trolley, serve to residents, clear
  • Serve food appetisingly on plates/dishes for residents, bearing in mind the personal preferences of each resident
  • Prepare and serve sandwiches, salads, soups, other food as requested by the Manager
  • Follow Home and Supplier (Apetito) procedures in full at all times
  • Maintain Health & Safety within the Home
  • Maintain good communications with residents, relatives, representatives, colleagues, other health care professionals
  • Keep up to date with all Mandatory training requirements
  • Demonstrate a willingness to complete further training modules
  • Be available to work shifts as per the rota
  • Maintain confidentiality and observe data protection and associated guidelines

Training provider

On the NVQ Intermediate Apprenticeship, the Apprentice will work as a Housekeeper, learning techniques like cleaning and servicing a range of housekeeping areas as well as use of different chemicals and equipment in housekeeping.

The Apprentice will learn about cleaning and servicing a range of housekeeping areas, the use of different chemicals and equipment in housekeeping and how to provide a linen service to an employer’s standards. 

Prospective Role

This course will advance the Apprentice’s Housekeeping skills so they can then carry out a full range of tasks.

The Apprentice will spend the majority of this apprenticeship with an employer. Learning takes place in the workplace alongside support from Weston College’s team of expert tutor/assessors.

The course includes core units and additional units selected by both the employer and Apprentice.

Examples of topics covered are:

  • Cleaning and Servicing a range of housekeeping areas
  • Use of different chemicals and equipment in housekeeping
  • Provide a linen service 

The skills covered will allow an apprentice to perform the role of an intermediate housekeeper.
